....do to Google? When they finally go live, do you think that the competition will cause an improvement in Google's rates, or will Google just ride it out on reputation?

I personally am looking forward to it, competition is always a good thing.

I'm with you-I think that the competition will be good. With competition in place a business has to be the best to win the business. It is forced to advance or it will stagnate and die as the competition advances without it.

Google has been spreading too fast, into just about everything for my liking, so I hope they hurry up and launch publisher.
