If you are a family person, or even just from your own childhood memories, what author would you recommend for a toddler and young child? I have an almost two year old, and an extensive collection of Dr Seuss and other Scholastic Early Reader program books, and am looking to expand into other kid friendly stuff that isn't all rhyming stuff like Seuss.

All of Robert Munsch's books are fun, although maybe for a bit older child. All of Sandra Boynton's books. Although they rhyme, they're very good for little kids. Rhymes and rhythms are excellent for developing brains.

My favourite children's book has always been Munro Leaf's "The Story of Ferdinand". It's about a very mellow bull who prefers smelling flowers to bullfighting. Actually, you can read the entire book, with illustrations online. This site won't let me post the URL until I make 15 posts, but you can find it by doing a web search for "the story of ferdinand online" (second search result on Yahoo). The website is kinda glitchy and irritating (You have to click OK 3 or 4 times to 'turn' the pages), but it'll give you an idea of whether or not this is a book you'd like to add to your collection. It is really sweet! ![]()
