This will depend on how quickly you want the project completed, and whether or not you are planning on many contractors for different things or one to complete the whole project.

When I had work to be done I choose separate contractors for each different job that needed to be done. Then I could get the very best and possibly get the job done in a quicker time frame along with a cheaper price.

keep in mind when choosing a contractor you have to be able to make sure they will be available when you need them and that they will get the work completed on time.

Another thought to keep in mind (in Canada, not sure about US) is to make sure the contractor you've chosen has all his permits in place BEFORE he starts work.

When you hire a contractor and he has done the work remember to hold back half the money you owe him for 45 days just in case he has a outstanding bill from the place he got your materal from.
