Has anyone got any advice on getting started with fishing? Before now I've only ever been fishing once with my uncle a few years back. I did really enjoy it though never went again, though I recently landed (no pun intended) a job doing a bit of writing for a fishing gear website which got me interested in giving it another go. Admittedly I don't know much, though I do know I would prefer to stick to freshwater fishing. What tackle do I need and how much should I be looking at spending? I doubt I'll be taking it too seriously, though getting away from the daily grind of a weekend now and again wouldn't go amiss.

Hello Cobalt, It really depends on what type of fish you are trying to catch. I've found that in Oklahoma the best type of bait for catfish is either fresh, cut shad or large minnows. Some people have good luck with perch or goldfish. For bass, I've always had good luck with worms, either real or fake. The Powerbait worms are an excellent choice, they have a smell to them that the fish love. For crappie, it is best to use either live minnows or jigs. Depending on what type of fish you trying to catch, the tackle will vary by hook size and shape, also the size of the jigs and colors.

Thanks for the tips - I'm not looking for anything too adventurous to get started, maybe just start out aiming for perch. From what I've read they are a fairly easy catch and aren't too fussy about what bait they take. I think I need a little experience before I go looking for several pound bass - impressive looking fish but not quite as easy to land ![]()

Yeah, perch will go for almost anything. Little pieces of worm work really good. I just don't like taking them off the hook because they fin you and it feels like fiberglass. Bass are much more fun because they fight the whole way in. Catfish are really fun because its sit and wait, and then all of a sudden your pole will just hump over! Its exciting. The first fish I caught on my catfish pole was actually a striper. That was fun. My first one weighed 12 pounds.
