Default Punishment

I have a friend with diabetes. She manages it very poorly and as a result her insurance company has warned her that she is at such a huge risk for complications, that until she starts doing what she is told, she has to pay an extra $50 a month premium.

This seems entirely reasonable to me, because I don't see why everyone else should pick up the tab for things that are avoidable. But is it a common thing? I've never heard of it before.

Well, I know of company health plans that charge more for smokers, so about the same.

This is a surprise to me because I am used to socialised medicine, but it makes a lot of sense. The rest of us shouldn't have to pick up the tab for care and treatment that could have been avoided.

Exactly. Why should I be paying the bill for her to have treatment for complications that needn't have happened in the first place. She needs to learn to look after herself.
