To me this always seemed something that a girl should decide for themselves. But my friend just went and had her 6 month old daughter's ears pierced! I could never impose my choice on my kid like that.

Well, I had my ears pierced when I a baby too. My sister and all of my friends cousins had their ears pierced when they were babies too. I really don't think there's something wrong with that.
