Assuming that you've got a site, whether it be as a hobby or work, how seriously do you take Search Engine Optimization? Do you have a separate budget set up, or is it something you don't worry about too much? Personally, I've got a few sites, both work and play. I've always done my own Search Engine Optimization work, and whilst I'm no expert, I know enough to get a reasonable placing for a given keyword. I prefer to invest more in advertising - Pay Per Click with Adwords has worked particularly well - than in the likes of SEO, though that is more to do with seeing too many webmasters getting ripped off. I'm probably guilty of being a little lapse in my approach - perhaps I could get more out of my sites with a dedicated professional. Either way, I'll be sticking to learning through books and experience.

Search Engine Optimization is paid as well as organic. So if you are good with Adwords, then that is SEO. I use both paid and organic, paid for right now traffic and at the same time work on the organic to get the free traffic.

If you approach a search engine optimization company then they will charge you a small fortune for optimizing your website and then you are not even sure yet if they produce any good results. A few years back I signed up to some Search Engine Optimization forums and bough a bunch of books online on the subject and I ended up being able to do SEO on my own websites. It's the smartest thing I ever did.
