Are there any good sites that give advice on improving backlinks? All I see are companies that ask you to pay for backlinks. Wish there was an easier way to do this.

You can do worse than web directory and article submission. Both are recognised methods of building backlinks though they do require either a financial investment or time to be worthwhile.

If you stick to established link and article directories then you can build some valuable links. They aren't as good as text links on high-Page Ranking, established, relevant sites, but they are beneficial and ideal for those looking to build links on a budget.

There are plenty of sites dedicated to this sort of thing - Stick "directory submission" in Google and you'll see plenty of results.
